WHO IS ELENA MIKHEEVA?

Elena Mikheeva is a Russian journalist living in London who writes about life journeys, people and inspirational activities. She’s has wonderful voluminous hair and is like a young Kay Burley but with a less prickly demeanour.

Mikheeva has amassed 20k followers on Instagram (click on any image to follow) and because her texts are predominantly in her native tongue, I thought an interview here would be of interest to her followers (me included) for those that don’t speak Russian.

When did you come to the UK and what brought you here?

One and a half year ago I arrived in London to see Elizabeth Tower, eat fish and chips and meet the Queen. As a result, the tower was closed for repair, fish and chips  weren’t so healthy and from the Queens’s family I caught only prince William. However, the city brought  me many more pleasant surprises and discoveries than tourist stereotypes. I presented a lucky ticket to London  giving it a chance to strike my heart. The more I live here the more I’m in love with it. But if tomorrow you tell me that you know a breathtaking place in Cuba where you can dance till you drop, twist cigars and worship to the god of hedonism I сan betray London. I’m joking. Or perhaps, no.

Do you feel that it’s harder now for people to get a job as a journalist as there are so many bloggers and influencers providing different outlets?

Nowadays journalism is changing and we can’t ignore it. Over time our profession will die because I’m just a mediator between data source and audience. You can broadcast information from the scene and communicate directly with readers and spectators using the Internet, live video and social net. And speaking of which , don’t forget to follow me on Instagram. I write in Russian (if you know it) but there’re always pretty freckles. They are worth being liked.

What do you love most about your job, tell me how you started out in journalism please?

I ran my own business in Russia for 7 years. When I came to the UK I was confused a  bit, reflected a little and after all I pulled myself together. “I will be a journalist”, – I thought and went to get acquainted with the editors of the Russian press. Somebody trusted me, somebody not. For complete authenticity I had a notebook, a pencil and a casual jacket. I’m absolutely sure that the last one played the decisive role. Oh, yes, also my natural curiosity! It’s damn interesting to know how a man manages the yacht, builds a bridge between countries, plays in performances, is very good at wine and every day or at least on Mondays seeks the meaning of his existence.  And more often he is afraid, makes mistakes, struggles but doesn’t stop. That’s why the core of my inspiration are people so similar in common search and so different in personal desires. And you know what is the most attractive part in my job? When your interlocutor overcomes the barrier from frames, shyness, fears and trust you as if you’re the last person on the earth who can capture a real him. And you justify his trust.

Do you have a morning routine? A best time and place to sit down and write?

The best morning is when you wake up early and you can afford yourself to be lazy not-bustler. You open a balcony, listen to the birds, turn on the vinyl player quietly and cook a toast with avocado as a super-breakfast. First of all for yourself and, secondly, it looks charming for Instagram. With ages you study not to rush, all the usual things will overtake you if they’re destined to happen. And after breakfast you turn to your laptop that doesn’t care about your hair style and lack of make up and live according  to Ernest Hemingway mandate: “Write drunk – edit sober”. So my mornings is ideal time for correcting yesterday.

The best moment for writing is the airport. If you think that this moment may be reached only thanks to the flight you are mistaken. Every border state and anticipations look like a terminal and so the texts will be well done.

Away from journalism, how would you best describe your life style / personality?

A ginger girl who today rides a motorbike and tomorrow will curl up and wait for almond croissants. The name of the game – don’t confuse the sequence.

Where are your favourite shopping destinations in London?

A best shop starts near a mirror when you weigh your confidence, ambitions, inspiration, rebate and soundly set a price to yourself. It’s the most expensive stuff. And after that if the result is suitable you can have a look at clothes from Tommy Hilfiger or nameless boutiques with the best legend you have already known. Also I love things from ETRO and Burberry but haven’t grown up for them yet.

What is your favourite social media platform? And do you ever feel the pressure to keep posting content?

I receive the most heartwarming and responsive comments from Instagram so I enjoy it more of all. And sometimes top it off with Facebook. As you know the secret of a successful small talk is in avoiding politics, economics and religion. I prefer to stand by this idea and more often I don’t write about them. I’m not conscious about every day issues , after all tomorrow’s  newsfeed will get new one-day-heroes. I am about deep things which don’t cool down when you open the window.

How often do you get asked out on social media versus real life?

I feel comfortable both on social media and in real life but prefer the last one. So many connections and friendships have happened with me and so many beverages have been drunk thanks to those who had a courage to drop me a message: “Heya, how’re you? I know cafes with best coffee”, and I had a courage to trust them. But now Elena is a company with limited liability because I have the man I love.

Favourite James Bond film apart from From Russia with Love?

Let’s take all films with James Bond, cut the scenes when the women’s dress shoulders straps are falling down, speedometers of cool cars are overshooting and the handsome spy wears perfectly seated suits and glue them together. I assure you it will be a brilliant blockbuster of all times. Curiously, that still nobody did it. We don’t need any sense ‘cause the whole point  that everybody wants is ‘mix but don’t shake’. But this is available only for certain personalities and we will forever admire them.

And lastly Elena Mikheeva, ever been in a fight?

Every fight is, first of all, always about fight with yourself. Sometimes if you want to win you have to throw in the towel. And the outcome of the battle always depends on how long you play: long-term or only until tomorrow. – Elena Mikheeva.
