Originally we featured Kelly in our listicle on top Californian Models to follow on Instagram. Now the former fitness and wellness trainer is closing in on becoming Maxim’s Finest. We reached out to Kelly to find out more about her and the Maxim competition we’re backing her in.
First things first, tell us about the Maxim campaign you’re involved with?
About a month ago I was selected by Maxim Magazine to compete in their competition called Maxim’s Finest; a competition in which Maxim selects a plethora of women (both national and international) to compete for the chance to be Maxim’s Finest. In addition to banking $25,000, the winner will be featured in a two page spread in Maxim magazine and receive world recognition as Maxim’s Finest 2017.
Although Maxim hand selects the competitors initially, it’s up to each woman to market herself and get votes in order to stay in the competition. People can vote once daily during the competition, however there’s also the option to buy votes and a portion of the proceeds are donated to the Wounded Warrior Project. The Homes for Wounded Warrior’s mission is to raise money to build and remodel handicap accessible homes to suit the individual needs of injured veterans. So not only are people voting for their favorite Maxim beauty to win her dream modeling gig, but also supporting the veterans.
Why does this mean so much to you?
To me, the Maxim’s Finest competition isn’t a beauty pageant or a popularity contest; it’s a platform that can serve as a positive catalyst for women in the modeling industry in addition to being an avenue that supports our military and veterans. My father always told me that “Luck is when preparation meets opportunity,” and I believe Maxim’s Finest is the opportunity I’ve been working diligently for.

What has come to define a “model” today has become so clouded in my opinion, and I wish to deconstruct and redefine that. To me, a model is not just another pretty face or a person with a massive social media following. A model is a role model, a spokesperson and public figure who holds her/himself to a higher standard.
The Maxim’s Finest competition means so much to me because I believe it can provide the support, and serve as a platform to help me achieve my goal of being a positive role model in the industry. It’s the year of the woman, as well as Wonder Woman, and what better time then now to bring more of these kinds of role models to the public eye? Maxim has brought so many strong, beautiful and tenacious women into publications, and I would be so honored to become a Maxim model.
“I am and always have been a hustler”
During your time as a fitness coach, what was your average day like? From the time you got up to the time you went to bed?
My average day was pretty intense: wake up, run, weight train, meet with clients, network, meet with more clients, and finish up my day catching up on my personal life. Its sounds pretty basic when I list it out like that, but everyday was so different. My days were never average because of my nature, I am and always have been a hustler, so everyday I tried to be better than the day before. Living averagely bores me, living with passion fuels me.
What got you into fitness and wellness coaching?
Interestly enough I never thought I would be a coach… I went to UC Santa Barbara to study biochemistry and public policy with the intention of becoming a UN diplomat who specialized in international public health policy. That chapter of my life laid the groundwork for my interest in health – maybe it was a combination of my schooling and background as an athlete. I grew up playings so many sports so the language of physiology came so natural to me once I started studying it. It wasn’t until after college when I contacted a woman, who I just wanted to workout with, who ended up giving me a position as her assistant. With a lot of practice, studying and several accreditations later, I became a certified fitness and wellness coach.
For all the women out there looking to get a physique like yours, can you give them 1 piece of beauty advice, 1 piece of training advice and 1 piece of nutritional advice?
For beauty – The basics are everything – love yourself more, drink water like its your job, get more sleep because you should, be outside in nature, eat healthy (I recommend being mostly plant-based), respect your body and move it, pick out your favorite vanities and highlight them. There are so many things telling us women what is beautiful, but the truth is that we are ALL beautiful in our own way.
As human beings are meant to move and it’s up to you to figure out your purpose for moving. Why train? Why get healthy? Figure out why you want to get fit and make sure that reason is something that will keep you accountable and dedicated.
The next thing you have to do is ignite your purpose with passion! What do you like to do? What’s your favorite kind of movement? What kind of activity could you see yourself doing daily? Find your passion for moving and you’ll be so pumped to train that it will become a part of your lifestyle.
The last part of the training equation is balance, and this one is so important because it is the key to success in all areas of your life. You will have days where you’ll train harder and feel like superhuman, and you will also have days where you are tired and can’t commit to the regimen. Trust me, even I have days where Ben and Jerry’s feel like my best friends and Game of Thrones is my therapy. This thing called life is a rollercoaster and it’s critical for each of us to understand that we go through cycles just like nature, and that its up to us to find the balance and persevere through both the great and challenges times. My point is, don’t let one day drag you down. Work hard, focus on your goals, live with passion, remember your purpose, find your balance and success will be yours.
I’m a big fan of instagram mostly because I love the visual aesthetic. Most of the accounts I follow are either motivational, satiate my appetite for wanderlust, or keep me updated on the world and my interests.
Funny enough, I don’t think I really get asked out too often on social media… I get a lot of “Hey’s” but that doesn’t really count in opinion. I’d prefer to keep my social media as is, social and for networking. As for real life, I’m single and I don’t get asked out too often, and I’m cool with that. The right person will come, I think it’s simply a matter of trusting the timing of life.

As a Californian girl are you more at home on the board or on the bike?
How about on a bike with a board strapped to me?! Honestly, I live to ride, so whether that’s on a motorcycle or board I’m always game. Both motorcycling and boarding are both two of my biggest passions because they make me feel alive and in the moment. There’s really nothing like it….. . Can you tell I’m an adrenaline junkie ?
In fact, if you’re not busy on Saturday, October 14th, you should come to the Moto Beach Classic! Its an event I’m hosting that is open to the public and bound to be a ridiculously fun time.
