Powerful Women – Missy – The Original Suicide Girl

“Hey, I gotsta know.” – Bank Robber, Dirty Harry.

Suicide Girls is an online community based website that revolves around pin-up photography sets of models known as the ‘Suicide Girls’. The website was founded in 2001 by Selena Mooney (“Missy Suicide”) and Sean Suhl (“Spooky”). I call her office in Los Angeles, I get put on hold. I expect to be rebuffed her face to scour at the receptionist, “Peter who, The Human what Podcast? What have I told you about screening my calls, you’re fired.”

Yet Missy answers, and with the most daintiest, coquettish of voices, tells me she has time to talk. By the sound of her fragile voice it sounds like she’s given the phone to a small child whilst she busies herself with model applications. But it’s her, (I think) and how did someone that cuts such a quiet shape, become the face behind one of the biggest alternative modelling agencies in the world? The full in terview can be found in the podcast attached, but like the black bank robber in Dirty Harry said – ‘I just gotsta know’.

When did you realise that this site was going to be huge?

Happened about 3 months in, we’ve been going for about 15 years now. I got an email from Ted Koppel office at Nightline saying they wanted to interview with me. I said holy shit, wait can I swear?

The interview went great and it just took off.

So you have an office?

Yeah an office above a coffee shop in a neighbourhood its very walkable, rare for LA. There’s a coffee shop, a juice store, etc. It’s all very lovely.

Are you the most famous on your street?

I don’t know. There’s celebrities in the hills, Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie go to the doughnut shop around here.

So the Suicide Blackheart Burlesque Tour is happening?

Yes in London, at the Electric Ballroom.

Any surprises this year?

It is the 20th anniversary of the Spice Girls, I’m just going to throw that out there…

Ted Kopple, not Ted Couples. Someone needs to learn how to use Google.

Thanks for that Fred, I have amended it to Ted Koppel.
