EDITORS PICK | THE CANALI SPRING SUMMER WARDROBE
Today I’d like to talk about some of the new Spring/Summer releases by Italian Menswear brand Canali.
Canali has specialised in tailor-made Italian luxury and men’s elegance for more than 80 years. The house offers both ready-to-wear and Made to Measure services through its Su Misura service.
As the UK recorded it’s hottest day this Easter weekend, we can safely do away with our winter wear and entertain a refined Spring/Summer look.
When perusing the Canali website it of course came as no surprise to find the ubiquitous Richard Biedul as their ambassador.
Richard has a very regal and classic demeanour that lends perfectly to the house look; classic tailoring with a modern fit, unfussy, with jackets slighter short, suppressed with a slim chest and flat front trousers that are tapered slightly by the break.
The colours are pared down, the palette is light, professional and designed to be versatile and interchangeable. That is why I’ve been looking at linen clothing on Canali website, and I’ll tell you more about it in a while.
I’ll be leaving blighty for a month in May, visiting the unforgiving climates of Singapore and Hoi An (Vietnam) and Australia.
Whilst it will be slightly cooler in Australia as they’re now entering their Fall season, it will still be humid (I hope) and I will be aspiring to gain a wardrobe that will be smart, breathable and functional.
Listeners to my podcast From Tailors With Love, will have heard me mention my penchant for the Pierce Brosnan Cream Herringbone linen suit he wore in the final act of The World is not Enough.
That cream looks wonderful on Pierce because of his dark hair and bronzed appeal. I have a very light skin tone so often opt for darker colour blazers to help detract from my uber-pale, borderline translucent complexion.
My pick for men of my ilk would be this Canali blue Venezia blazer with a faint chequered motif. The garment is composed in a strategic blend of cashmere, silk, and linen, creating the perfect sartorial formula for warm weather occasions.
If you were to order this online the blazer comes with the sleeves and hem unfinished so that you can have the piece custom tailored to your exact measurements at one of their boutiques.
Keeping with the linen theme, I have also highlighted this exquisite orange lightweight button down linen shirt with vertical stripe.
There is also a contrast white trim that runs down the placket, which truly distinguishes this shirt as a Canali shirt. Other colours available in this style are light blue and light green.
I should add that it might not be practical to wear the blazer in the Northern Hemisphere during Summer time. (Late June to late September). I was in Singapore last year with some lightweight unstructured blazers and found the heat overwhelming.
Indeed very few people in Singapore, even smart businessmen, don’t wear blazers.
Canali also do linen trousers, although they will refer to them as pants on their website. The light blue wool-silk, linen melange dress pants (trousers) will be a highly versatile garment.
Premium enough for formal occasions, light enough and practical for travel. Notice also my picks all contain fabric patterns with fleck and texture. This will give the garment some lift, ameliorate it amongst other summer outfits.
