“Thanks Bridesmaid, like the beard. Gives me something to hang on to.” – Lord Flash Heart, Blackadder 2.
I still don’t think it’s properly sunk in that Rik’s gone. I guess because he kept a relatively low profile towards the end of his life, he wasn’t proverbially apple bobbing in the house party of life, more asleep on the couch, we didn’t notice him get up and quietly leave whilst the rest of us were playing strip twister till the earlier hours. Only in the morning have we realised, oh actually, where did Rik go? Tangentially I remember listening to Roger Waters speak of Syd Barrett when hearing of his passing. Due to Syd’s mental illness – schizophrenia, Waters said ‘We lost Syd years ago. In my mind he died when we couldn’t reach him no more.’
Anyway these are just my thoughts, of course merely conjecture. My favourite moments watching Rik was undoubtedly in the Comic Strip Presents – Mr Jolly Lives Next Door. Sadly there is only a brief clip on YouTube, which I have a included. But whilst I’m nostalgically perusing through YouTube, I thought I’d share some other clips I’ve been watching this morning.
Sadly I couldn’t find the clip where Rik tells Nicholas Parsons his winning slogan, in fact this was the only clip I could find but it’s still a good one. But do check out the Facebook page and the Twitter handle because these guys post some great memories and even organise anniversary bar crawls to the pubs featured in the episode.
Whenever I think of Lord Flashheart I think of the moment in Blackadder 2 where he absails through the ceiling, turns to the camera and says, ‘It’s me’. But one of my favourite lines is later on in the series when he says ‘just because I can give multiple orgasms to the furniture just by sitting on it.’ Rik later recalled, “I was surprised when they asked me. Very honouring that they asked me. ‘Alright,’ I said, ‘I’ll do it as long as I get more laughs than Rowan.”
This clip is really owned by Adrian Edmondson, but it’s just a great insight into their chemistry. This was filmed in the Mayflower theatre in Southampton as part of their live tour. This blooper still has me in tears, especially when Rik tries to tell Eddie about his ‘sad and tragic news’.
