How do you make you working relationship with brands transparent on social media? And what are the punitive measures when you don’t declare those sponsored or gifted posts?

So many questions, I really am turning into that chick from Sex and the City.

In this episode of From Tailors With Love, the James Bond Style based podcast, I’m joined by Nik Speller, head of campaigns for the marketing agency; Influencer.

Through the prism of the James Bond brands we discuss what are the best ways for James Bond Influencers to disclose the working relationships through brands on social media.

Also from a brands perspective, what should they be looking for when working alongside influencers. Here are some snippets from the interview with Nik Speller.

Nik first off, you are a Bond fan am I right in thinking?

I really like The Living Daylights. Maybe a strange choice, I’ve always found the Gibraltar scene at the beginning is a near perfect entry to any Bond movie. It has a really nice balance and flow. I think Timothy Dalton is the underrated Bond.

I’m head of campaigns at Influencer, which is an influencer marketing platform and agency. I manage all the campaign work we do for brands.

Brands come to us when they want to work with influencers, so we go out there and find the right people. We then pair them with the right influencers who can then communicate the right message to their audience.

From a brands perspective, lets say I’m Tom Ford, what do I look for in James Bond Influencers ? What numbers do I need to crunch? And what tools do I have at my disposal to do that?

We treat it in a three prong approach.

  1. We want to look at the audience, who do I want to reach and who speaks to that audience? A lot of brands ignore that fact. If you’re Tom Ford, let’s say your key audience is men 30-45 year olds who live in the southeast of England. You need someone appropriate that can talk to that specific audience.

  2. Also what is the content? what are they speaking to that audience about? If they’re talking about skateboarding, perhaps the ability to work with that influencer becomes strange for Tom Ford. So you’re always looking for the type of content.

  3. Thirdly, are they safe. Do the cursory checks. There’s so many tools that can search through social network. Twitter is the most scoured you can use Brandwatch, that’s a good one. Socialbakers is another.

I’m seeing a lot of #Ad and #Gifted on the instagram from the UK influencers. Are there different instagram rules for different countries?

These are rules from the CMA (Commercial Markets Authority) and they’re not new. They’ve always been there. The CMA are responsible for making sure commercial markets operate fairly. They look for imperfections that aren’t clear.

They want to make sure consumers have a good understanding of what they’re buying into. That’s why they’re getting into influencers.

They started to realise that influencers were being paid and gifted and paid to talk about brands and products, so they had a biased opinion. Even if Influencers are saying they’re being objective. They’re not.

So are the advertising rules for Instagram the same throughout the world? 

There’s no one rule for all countries. A lot of advertising standard bodies have relationships with foreign counterparts. The FTC in America being the biggest one.

The European countries will look towards the FTC. A lot of the social networks have to adhere to that law because many are based in America and the majority of their users are in America.

So it makes sense for the ASA (Advertising Standards Authority) to look to the FTC first.

  • What if I’m a huge fan of Tom Ford, have bought nothing but Tom Ford bespoke suits in the past. Now Tom Ford and I are good friends, and he’s paying me to plug his new range. But in one Instagram post I want to tag a Tom Ford suit I bought with my hard earned cash. Do I now have to tag it as #Ad because I’m now on the Tom Ford pay roll?

  • Are the same rules there for James Bond Influencers on YouTube? Can I just put the sponsored/ad/gifted disclosure in the caption or do I have to tell people in the video?

Reportedly they didn’t want to start paying EON to be featured in the James Bond franchise so they were told to hit the bricks.

A quick shout out to James Bond Lifestyle who are stocking some screen accurate James Bond chairs by G Plan. The collection includes a black leather G Plan 6250 armchair that looks remarkably similar to the one used by villain Ernst Stavro Blofeld in You Only Live Twice.

Plus a red B&B Italia Serie Up 2000 Armchair and Pouf UP5_6 can be spotted in the 1971 film Diamonds Are Forever.

A quick shout out to an independent online store called Weavers Door who are stocking the latest Sunspel SS19 collection.

Sunspel tailored one of their original polo shirts for Daniel Craig to wear in Casino Royale. The Riviera Polo shirt has since become one of the staple pieces for Sunspel.

In a previous episode I discuss my wrangling with the brand when a shop assistant asked me to delete a picture I took in store.

Still I actively promote them here, however until I get a written apology from the CEO with some chocolates, I will never buy Sunspel. I know, hardly a great value proposition if I’m looking to get in the James Bond Influencers circle of trust.

Finally something quite controversial from Tom Ford. Apparently he was quoted as saying something unsavoury about the first lady Melanie Trump. He has publicly denied this claim on Twitter.

“In reference to a fictitious statement attributed to Mr. Ford regarding First Lady Melania Trump: “This is an absolutely fabricated and completely fake quote that somehow went viral. Mr. Ford did not make this statement; it is completely false.” – Tom Ford Spokeswoman”

This has divided many people on Twitter.
